String theory naturally leads to a consideration of backgrounds that are not manifolds but are "non-geometric" with transition functions that include the discrete duality symmetries of string theory. These have an interesting mathematical structure that involves some of the conecpts introduced in Hitchin's Generalised Geometry, but which are more general.
