Bifurcated \& thin current sheets: CLUSTER results

Bifurcated and/or thin current sheets in the Earths magnetotail have been predicted theoretically for the past couple of years. However, observational evidence, especially for bifurcated current sheets, was scarce. Data from the four Cluster spacecraft proved to be ideal to analyze the highly dynamic tail current sheet. It exhibits both thin current monolayers as well as bi furcated sheets, under quiet conditions as well as close to the reconnection site.
