Numerics of waveform inversion for seismic data

Depth imaging and inversion of seismic data is becoming commonplace within the seismic industry. However the inversion procedures used today have a highly non-convex objective function and will often fail unless careful multiscale processing has been included in the workflow. In this talk, we will review some approaches to improving the robustness of the procedure.

Because the PDE-constrained inversion procedure used in industry can be very expensive due to the large number of PDE solves required, we will review and address some of the numerical challenges in this area. The talk will concentrate mainly on computational developments and will be illustrated with industrial examples from full waveform inversion of seismic data.
