Abstract

The distinguished lecture is aimed at a broad spectrum of scientists interested in the frontiers of mathematical research with applications and roots in theoretical physics and the other sciences. The Founding President of the Society, Professor Sir John Cadogan CBE FRSE PLSW FRS will take the chair. Event poster at: http://www.newton.ac.uk/events/2012/anniversary/connes.pdf

Alain Connes received the Aimé Berthé Prize of the French Academy of Sciences, Peccot-- Vimont Prize of the Collège de France, Ampère Prize of the French Academy of Sciences, Fields Medal, Crafoord Prize and the CNRS Gold Medal. He is a Member of the French Academy of Sciences and foreign member of several National Academies including the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Norwegian Academy of Science, the Royal Society of Canada, the National Academy of Sciences USA, the Russian Academy of Sciences.

UPDATE: A few months later, Alain gave an updated talk on the same topic which is now available at http://www.alainconnes.org/fr/videos.php under the title "The music of shapes". The big advantage of the more recent talk is that, in the meantime they solved the problem of the too high Higgs mass and Alain could report on this progress while at the end of the first talk Alain explained that they were stuck...
