Two-dimensional deformations of aggregates of disks

Abstract: A continuum formulation is obtained, able to capture the characteristic behavior of a two-dimensional assembly of disks subjected to biaxial compression. Fluctuations from the average strain are included, which are required to ensure equilibrium at any step of the imposed deformation, and which receive a directional characterization. In this frame, induced anisotropy and dilatancy are captured and explained as consequences of the evolution of the contact forces.
