Overview of elastic frictional deformation in dense granular media in quasi-static equilibrium
Abstract: From a historical note on Coulombís first phrasing of the friction law, the incremental formulation for forces and displacements of two bodies in contact is considered. The results are discussed in the context of densely packed granular media. Information on such media may be derived from experiments and numerical simulations. Examples of both are treated leading to a classification of important length scales in densely packed granular media. In concluding remarks the importance of spatial heterogeneity is noted.
