Discrete Particle Model: Approximating the Shape of Sediment Particles
Abstract: A discrete particle model using spheres to represent sand grains has been modified to allow for individual particles to be composed from pairs of partial spheres sharing a common disc of intersection, termed "composite particles". Simulations with spherical elements exhibit a critical angle of 26 degrees in good agreement with available experimental data. Simulations performed with composite particles demonstrate that these particles may be constructed to exhibit a critical angle similar to beach sand, about 33 degrees. These results along with preliminary simulations for sheet flow transport of composite particles will be presented.
