Avalanche onset on a 2D granular packing: preliminary results
Abstract: General aspects of the dynamics of a granular 2D packing of discs slowly tilted till the system looses its stability and an avalanche takes place is discussed. The evolution of the system, constructed with monodisperse discs placed on a thin cell, will be studied by image analysis. As in the 3D case (packing of spheres), the systems undergoes several rearrangements of different sizes before the avalanche takes place. For thick systems not only small rearrangements are detected but also displacements of large clusters of discs are observed in the bulk and in the packing free surface (precursors). In particular, characteristics angles and the avalanche mass were determined for packs of different heights and first results on precursors on a thick system will be presented.
