Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences

Arithmetic Geometry

5 January - 3 July 1998

Organisers: J-L Colliot-Thélène (Orsay); J Nekovár (Cambridge); C Soulé (IHES)

A Newton Institute Workshop

During the programme on Arithmetic Geometry at the Newton Institute (Cambridge, UK), whose organizers are J-L Colliot-Thélène, J Nekovár, C Soulé

Special Lectures on

Applications of Model Theory to Diophantine Geometry

17 - 19 March 1998

A MacIntyre: Weil cohomologies and logic
(1 lecture)

A Pillay, T Scanlon: Model theoretic approach to and results about diophantine geometry
(6 lectures)

The aim of the lectures will be to explain how model-theoretic methods have contributed towards proving finiteness theorems in diophantine geometry. The lectures will concentrate on the proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields in positive characteristic.

There will be two lectures on 17 and 19 March, three lectures on 18 March.
The first lecture will begin at 14:30 on 17 March.

Applications: The lectures will take place at the Newton Institute and accommodation for participants will be provided at Wolfson Court, adjacent to the Institute. The conference package costs 70 which includes registration fees, bed and breakfast for two nights, lunch and refreshments during the days that the workshop takes place. Participants are expected to register on 17 March between 09:00 and 12:30.

Completed application forms should be sent to Heather Hughes at the Newton Institute.

For matters about the programme, contact Jan Nekovár.

**Closing date for applications: 28 February 1998**
